People love them some health care...

Turns out, people want universal health care... AND THEY'RE WILLING TO PAY HIGHER TAXES TO GET IT.

The poll found Americans across party lines willing to make some sacrifice to ensure that every American has access to health insurance. Sixty percent, including 62 percent of independents and 46 percent of Republicans, said they would be willing to pay more in taxes. Half said they would be willing to pay as much as $500 a year more.

Nearly 8 in 10 said they thought it was more important to provide universal access to health insurance than to extend the tax cuts of recent years; 18 percent said the tax cuts were more important.

Huge shocker. Especially since it's become widely known how much it's costing us to have so many dependent on emergency care. The interesting thing is that a year out from the primaries, health care has become a massive issue

All of which illuminates the reality that no White House hopeful can be taken seriously in the rapidly evolving 2008 race without confronting what many Americans have long said is one of their biggest concerns: the availability and affordability of health care.

"Every candidate is going to have to have a health-care plan, because it is the number one domestic policy issue on the minds of voters," said Karen Ignagni, president of America's Health Insurance Plans

I was surprised all to Hell to discover that people would pay higher taxes (or at least would favor taxing the rich) for some health care action.
