I don't give a damn about Michael Richards
The whole "Ban the 'N' Word" flap. I was watching CNN and saw a running headline, "Black leaders want to ban the 'N' word, but is Hollywood listening?"
What a bunch of hooey. Racism is a fundamental and seemingly intractable problem in our country. NYC cops shooting unarmed men engaged in NO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY is a problem. The drop out rate among young people of color is alarming. The number of black men rotting in jail for what amount to crimes associated with drug addiciton is a travesty.
Banning the 'N' word is pablum served up to an eager white public. ...As long as we don't say the 'N' word, we're not racists and racism isn't a problem. The End.
I've got my hopes and dreams for my country set a little higher than Thou Shalt Not Say The 'N' Word! We are better than this foolishness. Words carry weight. Words do have impact, but actions change lives. The word "justice" sounds great, but means nothing unless we do the work required to render/ensure/augment/manifest it to all people in equal measure.
